Vice Chancellor's Message

The ancient name of the Prayagraj city is ‘Prayag’ which means in Sanskrit language, a "place of sacrifice", as it is believed to be the spot where Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating the world. The city was renamed as Ilahabad by Mughal emperor Akbar later British further renamed it as Prayagraj. The city has number of manifestations and references in ancient Vedic and Pauranic literatures, which recognize the place as Tirth Raj Prayag. The city has privilege of Triveni due to confluence of three holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Every year in the month of January, one month long religious fair called as Magh Mela takes place with huge gathering of pilgrims from all over the world. Every twelfth and Sixth year mega event of Maha Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh respectively takes place in which billions of pilgrims from all around the globe come to the holy city to search for spirituality, solace and peace.

In the ancient time ‘Bharadwaj Muni Ashram’ a famous education centre, was located near the bank of Ganga. Later, when India advanced towards modernity distance education plays an important role in the field of higher education. To fulfill this need U.P Rajarshi Tandon Open University was established by the UP Act No. 10 of 1999 as passed by the Uttar Pradesh legislature. It is the one and only State Open University in Uttar Pradesh. This University was named after Bharat Ratan Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, an illustrious son of India from Prayagraj who made great sacrifices for the sake of our independence and dedicated himself to the cause of Hindi as a National Language. The jurisdiction of this University is entire state of Uttar Pradesh. The purpose of establishment of the University was enhancing access at larger scale to higher education through distance mode and also providing and maintaining higher standards in the quality of education to be imparted through distance mode. The University has embossed a niche for itself among the premier academic institutions of open learning and distance education. This University conducts its academic activities through a diversity of means of distance and long-lasting education, and functions in cooperation with the existing Universities, Colleges and Institutions of higher learning, and makes full use of the infrastructure of these organizations. The motto of the University is “To Reach the Un-Reached”. University has been offering it’s services through 10 regional centers (Prayagraj, Kanpur, Bareilly, Agra, Meerut, Noida, Jhansi, Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Lucknow) and approximately 800 study centers scattered all over Uttar Pradesh. It is providing opportunities for higher education even in the remote and unprivileged regions of the state to a large cross-section of society.         Any institute of higher education should be known by its research activities. The prime priority/objectives will be to promote research activities which aim to develop innovative solutions to the community’s most daunting challenges. In addition to this, priorities are on quality enhancements in distance education and facilitating intensive efforts to nurture good faculty. The journey to excellence and quality is a continuous and rigorous process. We are committed to build a future of our learners by inculcating moral values and ethics.
